Executive Leadership Program (ELP) - Overview

Launched in 2006, EOD's Executive Leadership Program (ELP) continues to evolve to meet the growing demands and expectations of lab and program executives.  Enhance your leadership development journey by participating with your peers in this dynamic, interactive program tailored to meet organizational goals and address your personal leadership challenges.

Who should consider this program

For optimimum benefit from the Executive Leadership Program participants should be...

  • Current Lab, Division, or Program Directors, Associate Directors, or have similar levels of leadership responsibilities; or 
  • Serving in a temporary director role; or
  • Preparing to take on a directorship or similar role

Program Elements

Key elements of the ELP

  • A bi-annual program, offered every other fiscal year
  • A 12-day value-added commitment for participants
  • Scheduled in three, 4-day modules over a 9-month period
  • 12 participants go through the program as an intact group
  • Tailored to best accommodate participant's schedules
  • Periodic discussion forums are facilitated by participants
  • Participants are paired with an executive coach for monthly individualized coaching sessions.
  • Ongoing networking opportunities
Program Dimensions and Features

Dimension 1: Leaders as Learners
Focuses on personal discovery and development in the company of your peers; assess your personal leadership style and effectiveness and gain knowledge of contemporary leadership models.  During this module, you will:

  • Learn and apply contemporary leadership models for a world-class scientific/technical organization.
  • Gain an understanding of personal leadership strengths and limitations and strategies to bridge skill gaps.
  • Develop processes to align purpose and action toward desired outcomes.
  • Develop an awareness of personal choice and impact on others.
  • Work with a personal coach in confidential individual sessions throughout the program.

Dimension 2: Collaborative Leadership
Focuses on strengthening your ability to inspire and engage employees, build strong teams, work horizontally across organizations, and improve the performance of work groups by better understanding human interaction. During this module, you will:

  • Experience models, tools and techniques for forming and leading effective teams.
  • Enhance ability to align resources to achieve on time and on budget outcomes.
  • Develop skills for coaching employees to maximum satisfaction and development.
  • Design mutual purpose to move from conflict to common ground.
  • Enhance capacity to build strategic partnerships and alliances.
  • Focus on proven models for coaching and conflict resolution.
  • Practice meeting management and feedback models.

Dimension 3: Leading an Effective Organization
Focuses on building your capacity to balance a powerful vision with a clear view of reality as well as understanding and creating strategies for change. During this module, you will: 

  • Develop organizational strategies, aligning vision, goals and resources.
  • Gain tools for moving from idea to action-building agreement and a plan for action.
  • Experience models, tools and techniques for working with differences, valuing diversity and building organizational alignment.
  • Deepen commitment to creating and living organization values in a complex environment.

Integrative Threads -- Throughout Program You Will:

  • Join peer groups to enhance opportunities to practice new skills
  • Participate in facilitated discussions to foster a spirit of openness, authenticity and collaboration.
  • Read and discuss recommended resources to further participant's individual learning
  • Experience, practice and apply coaching skills
  • Discuss individual action plans and commit to take learning forward.
  • Celebrate individual and group achievement
Program schedule

The Executive Leadership Program is a bi-annual program.

The course dates for each ELP program year is coordinated to accommodate participants and trainer schedules as much as possible. 

The next ELP is anticipated for FY15.

Program costs and payment process

Participant investment charge-back fees for the ELP will be set once funding is available and the next program schedule is releasedFees cover trainer costs, program materials, individual assessments, one-on-one coaching, and logistic costs.

Please have your representative with signature authority email the account key to charge for your participation to Michelle Darveau, within 6 weeks of the start date of the ELP.
